Howell Day Celebration Could Be Moved For 2022
The annual celebration may be affected by planned construction at Soldier Memorial Park.

HOWELL, NJ — The proposed construction at Soldier Memorial Park could have an impact on this year's Howell Day celebration. Howell Day is the township's largest annual community event for its residents, according to Howell Township.
Township Manager Brian Geoghegan inquired at a recent town council meeting about the possibility of canceling Howell Day due to Soldier Memorial Park being upgraded with new restrooms and lighting for night events.
“I just want to get a sense from the Council what you thought about maybe in lieu of Howell Day, hosting a different event, possibly later in the year, or an alternate location,” Geoghegan said.

The council proposed several alternatives to the event, including postponing Howell Day and transforming it into a fall or winter festival, “I think it would give the residents an opportunity to enjoy the improved park more, and would also give us an opportunity to celebrate fall. And perhaps we would have a greater response from the citizens,” said Councilwoman Evelyn O’Donnell.
“I think it’s important to have a community event, but I think that the concept of having something closer toward the winter holidays is novel,” said Councilwoman Suzanne Brennan.

Councilman John Bonevich spoke out against the changes stating, “We have to have Howell Day, I think the community needs more, not less, events.”
Moving the event to other locations, such as Echo Lake or Oak Glen Park, was also addressed by the council.
Howell Day celebrations were previously held at Oak Glen Park before being relocated to Soldier Memorial Park.
The council informed Geoghegan that Howell Day would still be held on Sept. 24, but that, barring any conflicts, it would most likely be held at Oak Glen Park for 2022.
