
HOWELL, NJ -- The Howell Township Police Department is accepting applications for a position of a full-time police officer.
Police Chief Andrew Kudrick said the deadline to apply is Monday, May 24, 2016.
The Howell police department has 111 sworn officers, and serves 55,000 residents in the township, which covers 63 square miles.

The department is accredited through the New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police.

Applicants who are not certified under the New Jersey Police Training Commission are required to have successfully completed the Monmouth County Police Chiefs Association Entry Level Examination. Sworn officers, both in and out of state including SLEO II’s (waiveable), are not required to take the Entry Level Examination but may be required to complete further testing at the discretion of the Chief of Police.

Qualifications for appointment
No person shall be appointed a member of the Police Department unless he/she possesses the requisite qualifications prescribed by the applicable statutes of New Jersey and the entrance requirements as promulgated herein and unless:
- He/she is a citizen of the United States.
- He/she has complied with all residence requirements prescribed by state law.
- He/she is sound in body and of good health sufficient to satisfy the Board of Trustees of the Police Retirement System of New Jersey that he/she is eligible to enter the retirement system.
- He/she is able to read, write and speak the English language well and intelligently.
- He/she is of good moral character He/she is 21 years of age or older and under the age of 35 years.
- He/she is physically and mentally sound and emotionally stable, and possesses the necessary ability to understand and obey orders and to perform the duties required of a member of the Police Department to the satisfaction of the appropriate authority.
- He/she has served as probationary patrolman for one year or any extension thereof as prescribed by ordinance.
Educational requirement
All applicants for initial appointment to the police department shall be a high school graduate or the holder of an equivalent degree thereof recognized by the New Jersey State Department of Education; and have an associate’s degree from an accredited college or junior college or the hold an equivalent degree thereof recognized by the New Jersey Department of Education.
Kudrick said the educational requirement is expected to be revised to include military service in lieu of college. Military veterans are highly encouraged to apply regardless of degree status.
All applicants desiring to be placed upon the Township prospective employment list which will be established in accordance with the classification set forth shall first deliver to the Township proof of compliance with the education requirements set forth in this subsection.
Disqualifications from appointment
No applicant shall be considered for appointment to the Police Department who:
- Lacks the established qualifications required for the position for which he/she has applied or been tested;
- Is physically, mentally or emotionally unfit to perform effectively the duties of the position in which he/she seeks employment;
- Is addicted to the habitual use of drugs or intoxicating liquors;
- Has been convicted of any indictable offense or who has been convicted of any crime or offense involving moral turpitude;
- Has been dismissed from any governmental service; or
- Has made false statements of a material fact or practiced or attempted to practice any deception or fraud in his/her application, in his/her test, or in securing his/her eligibility or appointment
