Howell Woman Rescued From Route 88 Bridge: Police

The woman was attempting to jump off the bridge when an off-duty police officer saw her and pulled her to safety, police said.

POINT PLEASANT, NJ — A Howell Township woman was rescued when an off-duty police officer grabbed her and stopped her from jumping off the Route 88 bridge on Monday evening, police said.

Point Pleasant Capt. Robert Lokerson said Point Pleasant Police K-9 officer Travis Popiel saw the woman standing on the sidewalk at the top of the bridge about 8 p.m. Monday.

Popiel, who was off-duty at the time, stopped to see if she needed help and the woman started to climb over the railing, Lokerson said. Popiel jumped out of his car and was able to grab her and pull her to safety, he said.
