Woman Jumps Off Route 88 Bridge In Point Pleasant Boro

The woman landed in the Point Pleasant Canal.

A 23-year-old woman was hospitalized after she jumped off the Route 88 bridge in Point Pleasant Boro on Friday, police said. The incident happened at about 10:53 p.m. and prompted two passing motorists to contact police headquarters and report that someone had jumped into the Point Pleasant Canal.

Officers quickly responded to the area. The Point Pleasant Fire Department Station 75, Station 75 dive team, Point Pleasant First Aid and the Coast Guard were also dispatched.

Upon arriving, officers located the 23-year-old woman in the canal about 400 yards south of the bridge. Lt. David Radsniak coordinated the on-scene rescue.

Several officers responded with Sergeant Chris Leonhardt and Officer Matthew Mergner, who both pulled the woman from the canal with a rescue ladder. The woman was treated for hypothermia and transported to Ocean Medical Center in Brick for further evaluation.
