HOWELL, NJ - The Howell Township Police Department is warning motorists against cell phone use when driving after a driver admitted to using her phone when she struck a patrol vehicle on Sunday.

Officers from the department were investigating a collision on Route 9 in the northbound lanes near Casino Drive at the time of the incident. While officers were out of their vehicles investigating, an incoming driver - who later admitted to texting behind the wheel - struck an unoccupied patrol vehicle.

No injuries were reported in connection with the incident. The motorist was issued summonses, according to a social media post from the department.

“This is another reminder that it only takes a second to possibly ruin the rest of your life or someone else’s,” the department wrote. “We all are guilty of it on occasion but when there’s an active emergency scene that’s definitely not the time to be doing so. Move over or significantly slow for stopped emergency vehicles. This includes our tow/wrecker services.”
