HOWELL, NJ — A series of break-ins by teens at the former Xscape Theater in Howell has police warning kids to stay away and parents to control their children. The theater ceased operating sometime in the fall of 2020. Howell police said it has been the target of repeated criminal mischief. "Videos posted on social media platforms such as TikTok, showing juveniles inside the building, have drawn additional attention to the location and encourage others to trespass," police said. Multiple TikTok videos shared in recent days show toilet paper strewn all over, damage to some of the movie screens, and to other parts of the theater, in the Greenleaf Plaza on Route 9. Police said the property's management has worked repeatedly to keep people out of the building "by reinforcing entry points," but kids in particular keep finding ways to get in. "Entering this building is both dangerous and illegal," Howell police said. "Due to the extensive damage throughout the property, anyone who enters is exposed to significant safety hazards." People caught inside the building or damaging property may face serious criminal charges, Howell police said. "Parents are encouraged to speak with their children about the serious legal and safety consequences of entering this property," police said.
