Superintendent Hit By Car Was Former Howell Teacher
Steven Mayer, superintendent of the Robbinsville School District, was struck and killed Tuesday morning while jogging, police said.

The superintendent of a Mercer County school district who was hit by a car and killed Tuesday morning was a former teacher in the Howell Township School District, the district superintendent confirmed Tuesday afternoon.
Steven Mayer, 52, died Tuesday morning while he was out jogging, according to a post on the Robbinsville School District website, where he was superintendent.

“With a heavy heart, we share with you devastating news that our beloved Dr. Steven Mayer, Superintendent of Schools passed away this morning from a tragic accident,” the Robbinsville School Board of Education and the school administration said in the post.
Mayer had been a teacher in the Howell Township School District for six years, teaching at Griebling School from 1987-1993, Howell Superintendent Joseph Isola said.

"He was a beloved educator," Isola said. "It's clear he was held in high regard by those who worked with him."
Robbinsville schools were closed on Tuesday, and the district was providing crisis counseling Tuesday afternoon.
Mayer was killed while jogging with his dog on Robbinsville Edinburg Road near Anderson Lane in Robbinsville on Tuesday, 6 ABC reported.
The driver of the car was a 17-year-old senior at Robbinsville High School, NBC 10 reported. She remained at the scene, and it was unknown if she would face any charges.
Mayer's wife teaches at Sharon Elementary School, according to the report. They have three sons. A vigil was planned for Tuesday night, 7 p.m., at Foxmoor Park along Route 33.
