Library Book of the Week:
Force of Nature, by C. J. Box
Summary: Nate Romanowski , Wyoming game warden Joe Pickett’s best friend, is an awol special forces soldier living off the grid, who has a terrible secret. Now his former commander wants to silence him and he will do anything to accomplish his task, including kill Joe Pickett and his family.
Why did I choose this book? I picked this book up because I had spring fever. Almost all of the scenes in this book take place outdoors in the mountains of Wyoming. Reading this book, it is not hard to imagine yourself fly fishing in a remote stream, or riding a pack horse visiting hunting camps that are tucked into the farthest recesses of the Rocky Mountains.

And while the setting of Force of Nature is idyllic, the characters are very human. Joe Pickett and Nate Romanowski struggle to follow their own moral compass. Often Joe Pickett’s moral code leads to conflicts with his bosses, politicians, colleagues, friends and family. Despite its imperfections, Joe believes in law and order. Nate Romanowski shares Joe Pickett ‘s morality but has no patience with the system and its problems. While Joe Pickett would arrest a poacher, Nate Romanowski, with equal disdain, would shoot him.
Amazingly the author, C. J. Box, is able to create these two characters without resorting to lengthy prose. Force of Nature is a quick read but it is never superficial, as much popular fiction can be.

Where’s the best place to read this book? The best place to read Force of Nature is in the saddle on a horse on a remote mountain trail. Or, if you prefer the comforts of home, it should be read at the kitchen table while wearing a flannel shirt, brewing coffee and frying bacon.
Force of Nature is the eleventh entry in the Joe Pickett series by C. J. Box. The other books in the series are: Open Season, Savage Run, Winterkill, Trophy Hunt, Out of Range In Plain Sight, Free Fire, Blood Trail, Below Zero , Nowhere to Run, and Cold Wind.
