Jefferson Varsity Rec Football Shows Grit Against Undefeated Randolph

Hard-fought battle between both teams.

Undefeated Jefferson Varsity Rec. football showed "True Grit" as they faced powerhouse and undefeated Randolph Saturday night.

Randolph received the ball and had first possession on offense. They pounded Jefferson with a fierce running attack and picked up two first downs, but then the Falcons strong defense stopped Randolph and caused a turnover on downs. The Falcons brought some ground and pound of their own with back, Jacob Jakova running for a few first downs of his own. Quarterback Logan Holleritter threw a nice pass down field that picked up 25 yards, but a fumble and turnover resulted after the catch.

Jefferson stunned favored Randolph in the opening series, just as Rocky Balboa stunned Apollo Creed with a left upper cutter in the first round of their fight. This was not going to be a game, but rather it was going to be a battle. The score at the end of the first quarter was 0-0. Who was going to break through first? The score at halftime, 0-0. This is an amazing game. Both teams are standing tall and playing tough. The third quarter ends and still no score and this is from two teams that in other games score at will. The fourth quarter begins and you ask yourself, "could this really end in a tie game". Well the fourth quarter comes and goes and still no score. The coaches and referees meet at the middle of the field to get directions on how to proceed. Each teams offense will have the ball on the 10 yard line and have four downs to score. If a team scored first the other team will be given a chance to tie. In round one of overtime play Jefferson has the first possession. On third down Logan Holleritter passes over the middle to Connor Brown for a touchdown. Victor Schiavo kicks it through the uprights to put the Falcons in the lead 8-0. Randolph matches Jeffersons TD and extra point to tie the game at 8-8. Round two of overtime, Randolph has first possession and scores a TD and converts extra point, taking the lead 16-8. Jefferson lined up on the 10 yard line, but could not put the ball in the endzone this time. Final score Randolph 16, Jefferson Falcons 8. All I could picture in my mind was two exhausted teams with Randolph arms embracing Jefferson and the words, "Ain't gonna be no rematch" and "don't want one" being uttered. What a great game, with two great teams. Coach Matt Millar had this comment following the game, "I have never been involved, as player or as a coach, in a game that had this much emotion - The football players played their hearts out - The coaches and I could not be prouder".
