MLK Day - A Day for Service
MLK Day is known by many as a "day on, not a day off" of work. Are you making January 16th a day of service this year?

Someone recently asked me, "What are you doing on Monday for MLK Day?" While I thought that I knew about MLK Jr. and what MLK Day means to many, after further reading and research, I realized that there actually was a lot that I didn't know (and I wish I had known previously).
MLK Day is happening this year on Monday, January 16th. This day is chosen because it honors the birthday of the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. MLK Day was designated as a federal holiday by Congress in the early 1980's, and the first instance of its celebration throughout the country was in 1986 (making this year the 26th year of celebration and recognition). The day is always observed the 3rd Monday of January.
This day is special for so many different reasons, but what I find interesting about it is that it is known by most as a "day on, not a day off" of work. Sure, our offices and places of employment may be closed, but many people around the country choose to designate MLK Day as a day of service in their communities.

MLK Jr. once said "Life's most persistent and urgent question is:
'What are you doing for others?'" Wow, incredible words. Dr. King believed in a world of equality and justice, and he also believed in setting big goals and citizen action to produce big results. No matter who you are, where you come from, and what your background is, I'd like to think we can all agree that each of our communities can benefit from a stronger sense of community, volunteerism, and unity in some way. Dr. King's message rings true to many people across the country and Monday is a great way to put this message into action.
As someone who has worked in volunteer management before, I understand the great need for volunteers -- especially at some of our local, smaller nonprofit agencies. In fact, some nonprofits are almost entirely volunteer "staffed" and driven. These selfless people come to "work" day in and day out to do what they love. If these people are volunteering year round to help their communities, can't we all try to give at least an hour on Monday to help as well?
The official MLK Day website (http://mlkday.gov/) has some great resources about
the history of MLK Jr. as well as volunteer and service ideas. My personal
favorite website about volunteering, VolunteerMatch (www.volunteermatch.com) has resources for both individuals and organizations on how to find and list local volunteer opportunities. I personally have used this site as both an individual and an organization, and I have always had great results. I highly recommend.
Even if it's too short notice to volunteer Monday, maybe you can remember the message of Dr. King and put it into action at a time that works for you and/or your family. But if you happen to run into a person or a group that is volunteering locally on Monday (or anytime!), please be sure to thank them.
