Socks To Be You
"I've been working so hard. I'm punching my card eight hours for what?..... Tonight I gotta cut loose, footloose kick off your Sunday shoes" - Kenny Loggins
A common dressing problem that we all tend to run into has to do with those darned things we put on our feet called socks. Unless, of course, you are a Crocs aficionado. Then you could care less about wearing socks. Unless of course, I am wrong, and you are supposed to wear socks with your Crocs. I have no idea. This is a topic best left to those true Crocs wearers out there. Since I mentioned the word ‘Crocs’ about a hundred times, I now feel like Steve Irwin, the Crocodile Hunter. (R.I.P. Steve, you are truly missed).
Back to the topic at hand…or should I say, at feet.
Ever have one of those mornings where you are all almost all dressed and ready to go work, and realize that you can’t find “the matching sock”? You know, the other sock that is a fabric twin to the one you are holding in your hand. With the time approaching to leave so that you are not late for work, you have a critical decision to make. (1) Go for the mismatched pair of socks and risk being called a freak by a coworker.
(2) Go sockless and hope that whatever potential smells that may emanate from your feet decide to sleep in for the day.

(3) Break out those Crocs and don them proudly with your office wear in hopes of boasting a new fashion statement that tells the corporate world something like, “I am Crocs, smell my roar!”
So, yes, I admit it. I have had such a morning event occur. Of course, it was on the day of a potential client meeting. I was beginning to get all freaked out about not having matching socks to wear. What would the potential client think of me if they saw the clashing footwear? As I was working myself into a sweaty state of mind, it occurred to me. Why stress over the dress?
I thought about my five-year-old son, and how we let him wear whatever clothes he picks out. This way, he can make his own fashion statement. One of the things that he intentionally does is to wear mismatched socks. He thinks it’s cool and it does not stop him from going to school (ooh…rhyme). Nor has it impeded his ability to socialize and to do well with his school work. He is proud to be who he is despite the socks. Nothing detrimental has come out of his totally tubular situation.
So lesson learned. It’s not what we wear on our feet nor about whose shoes we are trying to fill. It is about being able to stand up tall, walk proudly, and be yourself. If others judge you by the socks you are wearing, then, I guess it socks to be them.
Life…. Pull yourself up by your bootstraps and live it!
