An Essex County home inspector has built a free website that lets anyone look up the public records behind a New Jersey property — building permits, flood zones, fire history, property taxes, and more — by typing in an address.
The site, Permit & Parcel, covers all 564 New Jersey municipalities and brings together records from official sources, including state and county databases, FEMA flood maps, and the towns’ own municipal codes. No account or email is required, and there’s no cost.
“I kept watching buyers fall in love with a house before anyone checked the paper trail — the open permits, the flood zone, what the town actually requires when a home changes hands,” said Leo Betancor, a Certified Master Inspector based in Cedar Grove and the founder of the site. “All of that is public record. It just wasn’t in one place anyone could actually use.”
Alongside the main lookup, the site includes free single-purpose tools: a lead-safe inspection lookup showing which of the two state-required inspection methods each town uses under New Jersey’s lead paint law, a searchable directory of DCA-certified lead evaluation and abatement contractors sorted by distance, a fire-incident map built from more than 40 years of state fire records, and a radon map covering every municipality.
Homeowners can also look up property taxes and assessments, check the age of a furnace, air conditioner or water heater using its serial number, and find their town’s certificate-of-occupancy requirements before selling or renting a home.
A companion site, njflood.zone, gives instant FEMA flood-zone answers for any New Jersey address — built after the federal government shutdown left FEMA’s own map site unreliable — running on the site’s own servers with the complete flood map data for the state loaded locally.
The project was recently featured in TAPinto’s “At Home with Holly” column. Both sites are free at oprasearch.app and njflood.zone.

Glass Stair Railings for Sussex County Homes

Somewhere between the last swim at Lake Mohawk and the weekend the leaves turn at High Point, the project list moves inside. That is usually when the staircase finally gets a hard look. Most people climb theirs a dozen times a day without really seeing it: dusty balusters slicing the foyer into stripes, a landing that feels cut off from the rooms below. Swap the spindles for glass and the entry opens up. Light from the front windows runs straight up the stairwell. The stair stops being the thing in the way and starts looking like it was designed on purpose. SSD Glass in Newton shapes each railing to the specifications of the home it is going into, so a short run in a split level gets the same custom treatment as a tall open foyer.

Low Iron and Satin Etched Glass for Staircases and Balconies

Glass choice decides most of the look. Standard clear glass carries that familiar green tint, which is the whole reason low iron is worth asking about: it reads ultra clear, so oak treads come through the color they actually are, and so does the view past a balcony. Satin etched glass goes the other way, holding back whatever sits behind it while diffused light still comes through. Good call for a basement stair, or a landing that could use some privacy. Anyone pricing out glass panel railings from SSD Glass can see the glass in person at the Hampton Street showroom before committing to anything.

Railing Hardware Finishes That Match the Rest of the House

Hardware is the part people forget to plan for. It shouldn't be. If the kitchen has black cabinet pulls and the upstairs bath is all brushed nickel, the metal holding the glass on the staircase ought to look like it came from the same house. Finishes at Superior Shower Doors run from matte black and brushed nickel to satin brass for a house that leans warm, though not every finish is offered on every piece of hardware, so it is a question worth asking early. Same idea outside. Glass panels also go on decks and balconies, plus around pools, anywhere a row of posts has been standing between the family and the view for years.

Worth knowing: tearing out the staircase is not always part of the job. Existing stairs, decks, and balconies can often take glass panels as they are, and a look at the house in person settles how the install should go. Early fall is a comfortable time to start that conversation. Indoor projects are taking over the list, the holidays are still a couple of months out, and nobody has to rush a decision. Request a free quote from SSD Glass or stop by the Newton showroom. A phone call works too, especially if the staircase is an odd shape.
