Free program to help you get to know NJ Black Bears
The B.E.A.R. Group (Bear Education and Resource Group) based in Hewitt, NJ in cooperation with the Jefferson Township Recreation Department is offering a free program entitled “Get to Know NJ Black Bears and Become a BEAR SMART Community” on Wednesday, April 20th at 6:30 pm at Camp Jefferson’s Main Lodge, 81 Weldon Road in Lake Hopatcong.
The program will present information about the true nature of black bears, one of New Jersey’s most beautiful natural resources. They are truly timid creatures and generally afraid of humans. The B.E.A.R. Group’s mission is to educate residents about black bears, reduce unwarranted fears, promote tolerance of bear neighbors and foster peaceful co-existence between people and bears. Learn easy ways to lessen the chances of having bears frequent residential neighborhoods. It is so easy to do!

The B.E.A.R. Group has a wonderful and informative PowerPoint presentation and various pieces of literature that explain how humans and black bears can peacefully co-exist. One of their main resources is world-renowned bear expert Dr. Lynn Rogers, PhD, of the North American Bear Center in Ely, Minnesota. According to Dr. Rogers who has studied black bear for over 40 years, “You have a greater chance of winning the lottery than every being harmed by a black bear.” Please visit Dr. Roger’s website at www.bearstudy.org as well as the B.E.A.R.
