Ovarian Cancer, Suicide Prevention Recognized in Jefferson

The Jefferson Town Council issued two proclamations at its Sept. 4 meeting to bring two matters important to its members, AIM Jefferson reported. 

One proclamation designated September as Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month. The disease is among the deadliest of cancers and is the leading cause of cancer death among U.S. women in the United States, according to the proclamation. The documented urged residents to talk about ovarian cancer with their families and doctors and encouraged women to be tested.

The second proclamation established this week as National Suicide Prevention Week in Jefferson. Council member Debi Merz noted that this was important because the town experienced 12 suicides in the last three years.

As part of the the week, pamphlets on suicide prevention will be available at Town Hall at the Jefferson Township Library. A "Walk Out of the Darkness" anti-suicide walk was announced for Oct. 13.
