Former Jersey City Teacher Facing More Sexual Assault Charges

JERSEY CITY, NJ —A former Jersey City teacher who and was arrested last year on charges of sexual assault of an 11-year-old student, has had those charges upgraded, and he has been charged with sexual assault of two other students, the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office said.

Apparao Sunkara, 68, of Hicksville, New York, was arrested at the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office on Wednesday morning, authorities said. A grand jury indicted the former Infinity Institute teacher for the sexual assault of three female students, all of whom were 11 and 12 years old at the time of the alleged assaults.

According to authorities, Sunkara's previous charges of second-degree sexual assault and child endangerment were upgraded to first-degree aggravated sexual assault and second-degree misconduct.

Sunkara also was indicted on two additional counts of second-degree sexual assault by contact, three counts of second-degree child endangerment and two counts of second-degree misconduct.

The Hudson County Prosecutor's Office said it will be filing a motion to detain Sunkara pending trial.
