Jersey City Schools Will Be Remote For A Second Week

JERSEY CITY, NJ — Students and staff in Jersey City will not be back in the school buildings next week. Deputy Superintendent Dr. Norma Fernandez said Thursday that because of high numbers of students and staff testing positive for COVID, the schools will be remote next week, as they were this week.

Fernandez said in a message that 224 students and numerous staff members tested positive for COVID. Besides that, she said, other students have to quarantine because of exposure.

"Our staff wants to work," Fernandez said, "but their health prevents them from coming in."

Students will return the day after Martin Luther King Day, Tuesday, Jan. 18.

"We want our students to go back to classes with healthy teachers," she said.

After that, she said, the district will announce schedules for returning in person and apply measures such as "test to stay." Students will test weekly, as well.

"On January 18, Tuesday, everyone, students and staff, will be present at our schools," she said.
