Kids Were Home During Murder-Suicide In Jersey City: Prosecutor

A 1-year-old and 3-year-old were home when their parents died, the Hudson County Prosecutor said.

JERSEY CITY, NJ — Two young children were home when their parents died during an apparent murder-suicide in Jersey City, Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez said.

Lydiah Okongo, 40, and Henry Okongo, 51, were found dead in their Mina Drive home early Monday morning, Suarez said. Lydiah Okongo was found on the first floor with "apparent multiple gunshot wounds to her head and torso;" Henry Okongo was found in the basement with an "apparently gunshot wound to his head," Suarez said.

Although the final cause of death is still being investigated by the Regional Medical Examiner’s Office, it is being investigated as an apparent murder-suicide, Suarez said.

Two children, a 1-year-old girl and a 3-year-old boy, were in the home at the time. The boy was uninjured but was taken to Jersey City Medical Center for evaluation.

The case remains under investigation by the Prosecutor’s Homicide Unit and the Jersey City Police Department.
