Woman Struck 4 Children On Scooters In Jersey City, Left Scene, Prosecutors Say

The Jersey City woman hit a total of five children with her car, four on scooters, prosecutors said.

JERSEY CITY, NJ — Two women have been charged in connection with a hit-and-run crash in Jersey City in October that injured five children — four of whom were riding on motorized scooters, prosecutors said.

Tamara Tyre, 32, of Jersey City was charged Monday with five counts of aggravated assault, leaving the scene, and other offenses, while Yolanda Tyre, 56, was charged Wednesday with false reporting to law enforcement about the crash, prosecutors said.

According to the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office, on Oct. 6, shortly after 5 p.m., Jersey City police headed to Wilkinson Avenue, between Ocean Avenue and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, on a report of four teen boys struck by a vehicle.

Investigators identified Tamara Tyre as the driver of the Hyundai sedan that struck the victims, prosecutors said.

Tamara Tyre was ultimately charged with five counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon (vehicle), five counts of aggravated assault, five counts of endangering the welfare of a child, three counts of assault by auto resulting in serious bodily injury, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose (vehicle), obstruction, and knowingly leaving the scene of a motor vehicle collision resulting in serious bodily injury.

Yoldanda Tyre, besides the charge of false reporting, was charged with obstructing, prosecutors said.

"Yolanda Tyre falsely provided information to investigators identifying a different individual as the passenger in the vehicle," prosecutors said.

The teens on scooters who were hit were ages 13, 15, and two 17-year-olds, prosecutors said.

Prosecutors did not immediately respond when asked about the relationship between the Tyres. Patch will update this story when more information is obtained.
