98 Acres Added To Forked River Mountains
Ocean County officials finalized the $200,000 purchase to bolster forest management and regional conservation efforts.

LACEY, NJ — Ocean County has completed the acquisition of a 98-acre parcel located in the Forked River Mountains in Lacey Township.
This purchase marks the latest step in the county's long-term commitment to land preservation and environmental stewardship.
The newly acquired property will be integrated into the existing preservation holdings managed by the Ocean County Natural Lands Trust Fund. The program currently protects more than 12,500 acres of land in the area. Since the program began in 1998, Ocean County has invested over $19 million to acquire and maintain regional land.

"The Board of Commissioners is proud to continue expanding preservation efforts in the Forked River Mountains," said Ocean County Commissioner Robert S. Arace, who is a co-liaison to the Natural Lands Trust Fund. "This acquisition strengthens our preservation efforts in the region, protecting the ecological integrity of these forests while expanding opportunities for residents and visitors to experience them."
The 98-acre purchase was finalized for a total of $200,000. This funding allows the county to perform necessary forestry services, including the use of prescribed burns to manage and reduce the risk of wildfires.

Additionally, the county has submitted an application to the Pinelands Commission to establish a trailhead on an adjacent property. This project aims to improve public access and hiking opportunities for those visiting the area.
"Expanding the Forked River Mountains preservation area is about more than just protecting land, it is about safeguarding wildlife habitats, maintaining healthy forest ecosystems, and ensuring these natural treasures remain for future generations," said Ocean County Commissioner Frank Sadeghi, also a co-liaison to the Natural Lands Trust Fund. "We appreciate the continued support from Lacey Township and our community partners as we work together to preserve these important natural resources."
This latest acquisition continues a history of conservation efforts in the Forked River Mountains. The county previously purchased nearly 8,000 acres in 2018 and received a donation of more than 3,100 acres from The Nature Conservancy in 2023.
