FORKED RIVER, NJ — Maryann the Bear, a long-time resident of the Popcorn Park Refuge, has dies.

"Maryann lived a very long and peaceful life at the Refuge and was deeply loved by staff, visitors, and supporters," the refuge said in announcing the bear's death.

Maryann came to Popcorn Park after being rescued from a breeder in Ohio. The breeder reportedly had too many animals living in poor conditions. Maryann and her sisters would often escape the property, wandering the streets of Ohio until Fish & Wildlife intervened.

Upon her arrival at Popcorn Park, Maryann was known for her curious and adventurous nature. She frequently explored her surroundings, often climbing trees, scaling structures, and playfully interacting with her sister, Bonnie. Foraging was a favorite pastime for Maryann, and she enjoyed snacks such as grapes, apples and peanuts.

In her later years, Maryann received extra care and comfort from her keepers. This included annual grooming, nail trims and special enrichment treats like pumpkins and honeycomb. She particularly enjoyed soaking up the sunshine during long naps and listening to the calming sounds of the waterfall in her habitat.
