Drone Technology Helps Find Runaway Child In Waretown

OCEAN TOWNSHIP, NJ — The Ocean Township Police Department successfully located a runaway child Thursday evening, utilizing new technology in rapidly dropping temperatures.
Patrol officers were dispatched to a report of a runaway juvenile and immediately began a search due to the potential risks involved with the weather conditions, police said.
Officers established a coordinated and methodical search of the surrounding area. The department employed investigative resources, including Life360 technology and its newly acquired unmanned aerial system. Sergeant Michael Matelski operated the drone during the search efforts.

This technology-assisted approach allowed officers to narrow the search area efficiently, police said. The juvenile was successfully located in a densely wooded area along Oyster Creek. The frigid conditions and heavy wooded terrain made the integration of technology crucial for the positive outcome, according to police.
The Ocean Township Police Department acquired its drone through emergency management grant funding. This acquisition is part of the department's continuing commitment to enhancing public safety and emergency response capabilities.

The department has three Federal Aviation Administration-licensed pilots on staff. These licensed pilots allow for the 24/7 deployment of the drone resource when circumstances require its use, police said.
