Hindenburg Story To Be Shared In Lacey
What caused the disaster of the Hindenburg? Navy Lakehurst Historical Society member Bill Schmidt will share the tale.

LACEY, NJ — Airships ruled the skies at one time, but that all came crashing down with the Hindenburg in Lakehurst in 1937. What happened? Listen to Navy Lakehurst Historical Society member Bill Schmidt describe its final flight in “The Hindenburg Experience Talk” at the Ocean County Library Lacey Branch, 3:30 p.m. Nov. 14.
The Hindenburg, measuring nearly 804 feet in length, was the the largest aircraft ever to fly, carrying hundreds upon hundreds of passengers and traveling thousands of miles. Schmidt will discuss what caused the disaster on May 6, 1937, the lives that were lost and how it altered the future of air travel.
The Navy Lakehurst Historical Society maintains a museum of artifacts salvaged from the dirigible and a reconstruction of its bridge on the grounds of Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, within view of the spot of the devastation which is marked by a plaque.
