For years, Windows XP, the now decade old Microsoft operating system has been a staple of both home and enterprise computing. However, like all things digital, eventually it will be discontinued, with all support being dropped this coming April.
Many people still choose to use Windows XP, some out of preference, some out of necessity since it is the only version of Windows that will run on their systems (I'm talking to you, people with the infamous "old grey dell" desktops).
You see, come April 2014, Microsoft will be drilling the final nail into the coffin of the venerable operating system many of us have come to know and love.
Windows XP is already reviled by the security conscious, as users and enterprise customers alike are rushing to upgrade to more modern and secure platforms, such as the recently released Windows 7 and 8, which are much more robust against some of Windows XP's viruses and vulnerabilities. In April, Microsoft will no longer be issuing any support or security updates and patches- making this outdated software an even bigger minefield of security risks. Now, your PC isn't going to self-destruct come April, but you will be at a much greater risk for viruses and malware- as critical OS-level vulnerabilities will no longer be patched by Microsoft. This can leave your financial and other sensitive personal information wide open for hackers and other potentially dangerous individuals attempting to steal your valuable data.
The best way to move forward to lay this decade old software to rest and move forward to a secure platform. Have plan for data backup, and consider upgrading to a modern, secure system instead of getting abandoned in April. Using Windows XP after April will almost certainly mean getting a virus sooner or later- don't wait until your bank account is compromised!
