John Scott Stevens Of Forked River Dies At 44

Highly-regarded detective from Ocean County Prosecutor's Office passes away from injuries he received in car crash.

John “Scott” Stevens, 44, of Forked River passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 21at Jersey Shore Medical Center in Neptune as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident on Jan. 8 while working for the Ocean County Prosecutors Office.

Born in Plainfield, New Jersey on Jan. 28h, 1970, Scott was the first of two two children of Eleanor and John Stevens. The family moved to Lanoka Harbor in October 1970. Scott graduated from Lacey Township High School in 1988.

Scott continued his education at Seton Hall University, where he received a bachelor of science in business administration in 1992. He took a position with Ingersoll Rand and became a Certified Public Accountant in 1995.

After graduating from the police academy in December 1998, Scott began his law enforcement career with the New Jersey Division of Criminal Justice before being hired by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s office as a detective in 1999.

An avid sports fan, Scott volunteered much of his time coaching his son, Scott and teammates in Lacey Little League, Lacey Pop Warner and Lacey Youth Wrestling. To go hand in hand with his love of hunting, Scott was a lifelong owner of German Shorthair Pointer hunting dogs.

Scott is survived by his wife Dawn Stevens of 16 years, his son John Scott Stevens, Jr., his parents, John and Eleanor Stevens of Forked River, his brother Shawn Stevens of Brick, mother-in-law Catherine DeMichele, of Whiting, father-in-law Anthony DeMichele, of Whiting, brother-in-laws and sister-in-law Daniel and Megan DeMichele of Edison and Devin DeMichele of Whiting, as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins and close personal friends. Scott will also be missed by his three dogs, Fritz, Greta and Mack.

Relatives, friends and colleagues are invited to visit at Saint Mary’s of the Pines Church, 100 Bishop Way, (at the end of McKinley Avenue off Rt. 9) in Manahawkin on Tuesday, Jan 27 from 4 p .m. to 8 p.m. A Funeral Liturgy will be held at Saint Mary’s of the Pines R.C. Church on Wednesday, Jan. 28 at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to an education fund for Scott’s son at http://www.donationto.com/scott-stevens-memorial-fund, the NJ Sharing Network at www.njsharingnetwork.org or the Popcorn Park Zoo at www.ahscares.org.
