No Tents, Canopies At Island Beach State Park This Summer
The change was made for safety reasons, officials said.
SEASIDE PARK, NJ — Beachgoers headed to Island Beach State Park for Memorial Day Weekend will no longer be able to set up tents and canopies on the sand under a new rule set by the Department of Environmental Protection.
This change was made for the safety of both staff and visitors, according to Island Beach State Park officials.
Those looking for relief from the shade can only bring single pole umbrellas and a maximum of 3'x3'x3' shade shelter for small children, officials said.

The ban follows suit of some other Jersey Shore beaches, like in Brick and North Wildwood, which both made the change due to beach erosion. Read more: Tents, Canopies Banned From Brick Beaches For 2024
Pop-up type canopies are still allowed on Island Beach State Park in Mobile Sport Fishing Vehicle areas and where you can walk on the beach south of the swimming areas, officials said. However, tents are banned throughout the park.

Officials also reminded beachgoers that swimming is only allowed in specified areas when lifeguards are on duty. Lifeguards return to Island Beach State Park on May 25, 26 and 27 for the holiday.
It's also likely that the swimming areas will close on the holiday as the park frequently hits capacity during these periods. You can find more details about lifeguards and closures here.
