LACEY, NJ — One of two roller hockey rinks at Lacey's Gille Park is being converted into a turf field.

The reason for this is that the rink wasn't being used enough, officials explained at a recent Township Committee meeting. The new turf field will be used by the Lacey Soccer Club.

Lacey previously had a roller hockey league, but it has been defunct for a while.

"We did try to get the league back together," Business Administrator Veronica Laureigh said at the meeting. "It hasn't been successful."

The rink also has been vandalized on occasion. Read more: Hateful Graffiti Found Throughout Lacey Skatepark

At that recent meeting, one resident said that while nobody used the rink, nobody promoted it either.

She said she had hoped to see skating promoted in the community as a cheaper alternative to team sports for kids.

"Everybody can do that," she said of skating. "Not everybody can commit to a team. Not everybody plays sports."
