Controlled Burn Underway Near Ocean County Park

The burning is part of the spring program to control underbrush, leaves and pine needles that could contribute to a forest fire.

LAKEWOOD, NJ — If you are seeing smoke or smelling smoke drifting in your direction in the Lakewood and Brick area, don't panic: the New Jersey Forest Service is conducting controlled burning in the area.

Wednesday's burning is in the area near Ocean County Park, off Route 88 and New Hampshire Avenue, the Ocean County sheriff's department said.

Controlled burns are used to help reduce underbrush, leaves and pine needles on the ground that could fuel a forest fire. The New Jersey Forest Fire Service has been conducting burns for several days.
