Lakewood Man Charged With DWI During Child Custody Exchange: PD

The child's father suspected the man was intoxicated and reported it, Lakewood police said.

LAKEWOOD, NJ — A Lakewood man was arrested on drunk driving charges at police headquarters during a child custody exchange after the child's father reported his concern that the man was intoxicated, police said Tuesday.

Oscar Hernandez, 29, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and multiple motor vehicle offenses, Lakewood Detective Lt. Gregory Staffordsmith said.

Hernandez and the girl's mother, Paulino Guerrero, 32, arrived at Lakewood police headquarters on Third Street about 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 16, to pick up the girl from her father, Staffordsmith said.

The father, a 32-year-old Lakewood man, called police to report Hernandez appeared to be under the influence of alcohol as he drove up in a 2002 Chevy Suburban, Staffordsmith said. An investigation by Officer Joseph Rusk, assisted by Officers Kenneth Schaal, Tyler Ragaukus and Andrew Meyer, resulted in the arrest of both Guerrero and Hernandez on charges of endangering the welfare of a child, he said.

Hernandez was taken to the Ocean County Jail and the Chevy Suburban was impounded from the scene under John's Law, Staffordsmith said.
