Lakewood Man ID'd As Pedestrian Killed Saturday On Route 70: PD

Police say William Fernando Campo Verde​ was not in a crosswalk when he was hit while crossing the road.

LAKEWOOD, NJ — A Lakewood man has been identified as the person who was struck and killed Saturday night on Route 70 near Vermont Avenue.

William Fernando Campo Verde, 29, of Lakewood, died at Monmouth Medical Center Southern Campus as a result of his injuries, Lakewood Detective Lt. Gregory Staffordsmith said.

Campo Verde was hit in the westbound lanes of Route 70 about 8:40 p.m. Saturday by a 2017 Nissan Altima driven by a 56-year-old woman from Whiting, Staffordsmith said. Campo Verde was attempting to cross the road outside a crosswalk, Staffordsmith said.

Campo Verde sustained a serious head injury and was unresponsive at the scene, Staffordsmith said.

As of Tuesday no summons have been issued and the crash is still under investigation, he said.
