Lakewood Officer's Heroism Recounted Again As He Retires

Officer Sean Doyle's quick actions saved the life of a 4-year-old boy in 2013; Doyle is retiring after 20 years of service.

LAKEWOOD, NJ — The Lakewood Police Department bid one of its officers a fond farewell as he retires from the force, a farewell that included a recounting of his heroic actions that saved the life of a 4-year-old boy in 2013.

Lakewood Police Officer Sean Doyle was celebrated Monday. He was hired in January 1998, and started his career along with 13 other Lakewood Police recruits at the Ocean County Police Academy Class 70. After graduation, he was assigned to Platoon Three of the Patrol Division where he spent the majority of his career, earning several commendations, most notably the Life Saving Award for his actions on Oct. 16, 2013.

Doyle was seated in his squad car late that afternoon on East Fourth Street when a car quickly approached him with its horn blaring. Doyle sprang out and encountered a panicked father whose son had no pulse and whose lips were turning blue. After the father handing the then 4-year-old child to Doyle, he and nearby pedestrian Ivana Lopez successfully resuscitated the child after performing CPR.

After spending 17 years in the patrol division, Doyle finished his career with the Quality of Life Unit. He and Officer Kenneth Burdge spent their days giving tours of our facilities to school students, attending job fairs and community outreach programs as well as working closely with township officials to address various quality-of-life violations.

"Officer Doyle and his sense of humor will be surely missed by his LPD Family," the department said in a post on its Facebook page. "Congratulations on your retirement and thank you for your dedicated service!"
