Lakewood Student Brought Box Cutters To School: Police

Police said one was found in the student's backpack and another was located elsewhere in school.

LAKEWOOD, NJ — A Lakewood Middle School student has been arrested after allegedly bringing box cutters to school on Monday, police said.

The 14-year old student was taken into custody without incident, Lakewood Lt. LeRoy Marshall said. A box cutter was found inside the student's backpack, he said, and a second one was found in another location in the school.

Police were called to the school on Somerset Avenue when it was put on lockdown about 9:30 a.m. Monday, Marshall said.

By the time police arrived, the student had been located and brought to the main office; the investigation revealed the student had brought an additional box cutter to school.

No student or staff member was injured, Marshall said. The investigation is ongoing and charges are soon to follow.

All of the district's schools are equipped with metal detectors and there is a procedure for students to be searched. School policy also said students were to use clear backpacks this school year, following an incident last spring where an elementary school student brought a handgun onto a school bus and then into school.

It was not clear how the box cutters got past the school's security.
