Synagogue Threats Spur Increased Patrols, Vigilance In Lakewood
A warning from the FBI about a "broad threat" to New Jersey synagogues has prompted extra steps to protect those in Lakewood, police said.
LAKEWOOD, NJ β Lakewood police and the Ocean County Sheriff's Department have increased patrols and the law enforcement presence in response to an FBI warning of a broad threat to synagogues in New Jersey, police said Thursday.
There are patrols of both marked and unmarked vehicles, Lakewood Capt. Gregory Staffordsmith said.
"We have also deployed specially trained rapid response officers," he said. "Although there isn't any specific information pertaining to Lakewood, we are in communication with our local, county and federal counterparts in order to ensure the greatest protection to those we serve."

The FBI issued the warning Thursday afternoon saying it had "received credible information of a broad threat to synagogues in NJ," the alert read. "We ask at this time that you take all security precautions to protect your community and facility."
New Jersey Attorney General Matt Platkin said state agencies were coordinating with federal agencies and local law enforcement, and urged everyone to be watchful.

"Please do not be alarmed if you observe an increase in police presence as we are taking these steps in an abundance of caution," Platkin said. "We also call upon New Jersey residents to be extra vigilant and if you see suspicious activity please report it to your local authorities without delay."
"We continue to work together to keep New Jersey safe, and let those who would bring harm to the residents of this State know that New Jersey will not be home to hate, intolerance or violence," Platkin said.
The Ocean County Sheriff's Office echoed the statements, saying, "As of now there is no credible threat toward anyone or any place in Lakewood. We will continue to assist the Lakewood Police with extra patrols assuring the safety of all."
Law enforcement officials urged anyone who sees something unusual or of concern, to call 911 or call Lakewood police directly at 732-363-0200.
"As always, if you see something, call your local police or dial 9-1-1!" the sheriff's office said.
