Woman Charged After Hitting Lakewood Man, Leaving Scene: Police

Breaking: The man, Jerome Harris, was in a crosswalk; he was taken to a hospital for treatment.

LAKEWOOD, NJ — A Lakewood woman has been charged with leaving the scene of an accident after a pedestrian crossing in a crosswalk was hit by a car in Lakewood on Saturday evening, police said Monday.

Jerome Harris, 53, was hit just before 9:45 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 10, as he crossed Clifton Avenue at 7th Street by a 2011 Toyota Avalon, Lakewood Detective Lt. Gregory Staffordsmith said.

Harris, who was in a designated crosswalk, suffered injuries to his legs and back and suffered a cut over his eye, Staffordsmith said. Harris was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center for further evaluation and treatment, he said.

The driver, who was northbound on Clifton Avenue, initially left the scene but about an hour after the crash, the woman arrived at the police department and reported it, Staffordsmith said. She was issued several motor vehicle summonses, including one for leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident, he said.

Police did not release the woman's name.
