7 Winter Hot Tub Tips to Maximize Your Enjoyment

Winter is a great time to enjoy your hot tub. The temperature outside may be cold, but you’ll be nice and toasty in your very own hot tub outdoors. There are a few things you can do to maximize your enjoyment of your hot tub in winter. Check out these top seven winter hot tub tips.

  • Keep the use of jets and blowers to a minimum. Don’t use these mechanisms too much, as they inject cool air into the water, thus cooling the water temperature down very quickly. Keep your hot water longer through the sparing use of jets and blowers.
  • Stay warm through hats and drinks. It may sound ridiculous, but it’s wise to don a knit hat when you’re in the hot tub outdoors. This keeps precious body heat from escaping. It’s also wise to enjoy a hot drink while in your hot tub, such as hot cocoa, tea or coffee – or at least have one ready for you when you step out!
  • Don’t linger too long. It may be tempting, but don’t stay immersed for more than 20 minutes at a time. You could risk passing out. This is especially true if you’re alone. If you reduce the water temperature to 100° or less, you can spend a bit more time in there. You should also avoid alcoholic drinks because they are severely hydrating.
  • Check the water levels regularly. If you see that your levels are going down, this could indicate a leak. Have it repaired immediately, or risk higher repair bills later. If you neglect to address the lowered water levels, your pump and heaters may stop working and the water in your tub could freeze. You don’t want to be faced with that unexpected bill!
  • Hop in the Hot tub when you’re feeling sick. If you feel a cough or cold settling into your lungs, the best thing you can do is take a soak. This will cause you to sweat, and all those toxins will be flushed out. If you suffer from lung congestion, the cool air is the best thing to breathe in.
  • Put on lotion before and after getting in. Hot tub chemicals are very drying to the skin, so slather on the lotion before and after. This will undo the damage caused by the chemicals and keep your skin hydrated. Applying lotion to your face especially is a good idea so airborne spa chemicals don’t clog your pores.
  • Take a soak after a workout. Hot tubs are great complements to hydrotherapy. After an intense workout routine, get in the hot tub to relax your sore and stretched muscles, and help prepare you for another day of working out tomorrow. Your muscles need time to recover and heal properly, and your hot tub is a great way to do that.
