Artists Invited To Participate In Lawrence Hopewell Trail Project

The Lawrence Hopewell Trail's Art on the Trail program launched on Monday with the goal of creating and sharing art inspired by the trails.

The Lawrence Hopewell Trail’s Art on the Trail program launched on Monday with the goal of creating and sharing art inspired by the walking and biking trail that runs through Lawrence and Hopewell townships.

Residents are asked to take a walk along the trail with their cameras or art supplies, choose their subject by visiting the Lawrence Hopewell Trail photo gallery or tap into their own imagination and create drawings, paintings, videos and photos of scenes along the Lawrence Hopewell Trail. Submit them here, and the Lawrence Hopewell Trail will share the best of them on the lhtrail.org website, through social media and in future Lawrence Hopewell Trail publications.

The project runs through next spring and will feature new themes as follows:

  • August – September: Flora, such as a beautiful flower or bush, and fauna, perhaps your favorite critter, submitted by September 30
  • October – November: Art inspired by waterways along the trail. Think Rosedale Lake, the D&R Canal, or a puddle on the trail after a rain shower. Submit by November 30
  • December – January: Still life of found objects from the trail (sticks, pine cones, a rock pile, etc.). Submit by November 30
  • February - March: Architecture along the trail. Maybe a bridge, a fence, a building? Submit by March 31
  • April - May: Welcome spring with a self-portrait on the trail. Submit by May 31

The program is free for artists of any age. The Lawrence Hopewell Trail's goal is to connect with others and celebrate the community.

An internal panel will select from among the newly created art works to spotlight each period. Each selected creator will receive publicity and visibility of their works via the Lawrence Hopewell Trail website. Brief descriptions of their efforts, which they are asked to submit when they share their artwork, will be offered as part of the publicity.

When submitting artworks via this link, artists are also asked to share a little about themselves and their creations, such as what medium they used (crayon, pencil, watercolor, oil, video, etc.), and to share links to their works or profiles of themselves if they wish.

This program is being announced in conjunction with the return of renowned area artist and landscape architect Jeffrey Charlesworth to the Lawrence Hopewell Trail. Last year, Charlesworth launched the “slow looking” arts program to help local artists capture the beauty of nature on the trail. Charlesworth returns with a second walk in July, date and place to be announced.
