College Field Hockey: Rider University 5, Robert Morris University 4 (OT)

Rider University field hockey team won the 2012 Northeast Conference opener 5-4 on Sunday (Oct. 7) at Robert Morris University.

 MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. — Senior Marlaine Schneider (Feasterville, Pa./Neshamily) tipped in a shot 2:58 into overtime, her second goal of the game and sixth of the season, as the Rider University field hockey team won the 2012 Northeast Conference opener 5-4 on Sunday (Oct. 7) at Robert Morris University.

Junior Sandra Penas (Barcelona, Spain) and freshman Allison Muschs (Linkebeek, Belgium) assisted on the game-winning goal.

This is Rider's 24th regular season NEC win in a row, dating back to the 2008 season.

Schneider scored off an assist from sophomore Eefje Kok (Berkel Enschot, Netherlands) 13:50 into the game as Rider (8-4, 1-0 NEC) took a 1-0 lead.

Schneider had a four point day and her 98 career points are 10th best all-time at Rider.

The Colonials scored just 1:02 before intermission and the teams went into the locker room tied at 1-1.

Penas scored her team-leading 10th goal of the season 1:23 into the second half off a Muschs assist with senior Jackie Adams (Medford Lakes/Shawnee) converting a Muschs pass into her third goal of the season just 3:02 later to give Rider a 3-1 lead.

Muschs had three assists in the game.

Just 1:18 later, Penas passed up the field to put senior Gabby Burgo (Collingswood) in on a breakaway with Burgo hitting the back of the cage for the seventh time this season and the Broncs led 4-1 with 30 minutes remaining in the contest.

Penas finished the day with a goal and two assists (four points).  Her 44 career goals are tied for sixth all-time at Rider and her 109 career points are seventh best on the all-time scoring list for the Broncs.

RMU (3-9, 0-1 NEC) wouldn’t go down without a fight, scoring three times in the next 19 minutes of play to tie the game 4-4 and force overtime.

Rider freshman Alicia Carthan (Bordentown) made one save as the Broncs out-shot RMU 27-7 (16-5 shots on goal) and Rider held a 15-6 penalty corner advantage.

The Broncs defeated Robert Morris 8-0 in Lawrenceville in 2011.  Rider defeated Robert Morris 5-0 in 2010, 4-0 in 2009, 3-0 in 2008, 1-0 in 2007 and 5-0 in 2006 and the Broncs have won eight of the nine games all-time against the Colonials.  RMU had last scored against Rider on Sept. 23, 2005, when the Colonials won 1-0 at Moon Township before today’s game.

Rider travels to Connecticut for a pair of NEC games, visiting Sacred Heart on October 12 and Quinnipiac on Oct. 14.
