College Softball: Army 11, Rider University (3/6 innings); Army 4, Rider University 2

The Rider University softball dropped its eighth game in a row, as the United States Military Academy defeated the Broncs 11-3 and 4-2 on Sunday afternoon (March 24) at Herb and Joan Young Field.

LAWRENCEVILLE — The Rider University softball dropped its eighth game in a row, as the United States Military Academy defeated the Broncs 11-3 and 4-2 on Sunday afternoon (March 24) at Herb and Joan Young Field.

The games were originally scheduled for West Point, New York but were moved to Rider due to field conditions at Army.

In the nightcap, despite having only two hits, Rider (3-23) held a 2-1 lead into the fifth inning before Army (11-10) used five hits to plate three runs, all on a home run for the final score.

Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the fourth, Bronc sophomore Gina McCool (Marlton/Cherokee) hit a two-run double, scoring freshman Kim Valdes (Jupiter, Fla./King’s Academy) and sophomore Amanda Irving (Westminster, Md./Westminster).

Freshman Ali Meager (Clark/Arthur L. Johnson) scattered 10 hits and recorded three strikeouts in a complete game effort.

In the opener, freshman Dana Sensi (Allentown) had two hits including her second home run of the season, a three-run shot to left field to bring Rider to within 10-3 in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Sensi had two of Rider’s four hits in the game.

Red-shirt freshman Krista Morrone (Pipersville, Pa./Palisades) allowed 11 runs, 10 earned while recording four strikeouts.

Rider and Army met in Florida at the Rebel Spring Games on March 16 with the Broncs prevailing 4-3.

Rider hosts Hartford on Tuesday, in a non-conference doubleheader, beginning at 2:30pm.
