College Softball – Rebel Spring Games: Columbia University 11, Rider University 3 / University at Albany 7, Rider University 1

The Rider University softball team was swept on day three at the Rebel Spring Games in Florida Sunday morning (March 17).

KISSIMMEE, Fla. — Despite three more hits from junior Kehli Washington (Lulia, Sweden/New Rochelle) and five stolen bases, the Rider University softball team was swept on day three at the Rebel Spring Games in Florida Sunday morning (March 17).

The Broncs lost to Columbia 11-3 in the 9 am opener and Rider lost the 11am game against the University at Albany 7-1.

Against Columbia, Rider (3-17) cut the Lion lead to 4-2 in the top of the third inning, using a Washington single and a double from freshman Dana Sensi (Allentown), combined with a two-run Columbia error.

Washington has 28 career steals in 32 attempts including 16 for 17 this season and she has already surpassed her stolen base total (12) from her first two seasons combined.

Columbia manufactured three runs in the bottom of the third to extend its lead to 7-1 with an RBI single, sacrifice fly and RBI ground out.

Rider got one run back in the fifth inning when sophomore Allysen Breeden (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) scored on a throwing error, cutting the Lion lead to 7-2.

Breeden had two of Rider’s six hits in the opener.

Columbia ended the game on the eight-run mercy rule, scoring four times on three hits and a Rider error for the final score.

Freshman Montana Berg (Danville, Calif./Monte Vista) worked into the fifth inning, allowing nine hits and 11 runs, eight earned.

In game two, Rider took a 1-0, first inning lead on an RBI single by freshman Emily Cottrell (Beachwood/Toms River HS South), scoring Washington who led off the game with a walk and stole second.

The Great Danes responded with a two-out, two-run home run to left field in the bottom of the first and U Albany used a two-run home run and a two-run double as part of a five-run second inning to open up a 7-1 lead.

Rider was held to two hits over the final five innings.  Washington had two of Rider’s four hits in the game.

Red-shirt freshman Krista Morrone (Pipersville, Pa./Palisades) took the loss, working six innings, allowing seven runs, all earned while recording one strikeout.

Rider and Columbia met in Lawrenceville at Herb and Joan Young Field on March 10, 2013 with the Broncs winning the nightcap 4-3 after losing the opener 7-6.

The Broncs are off on Monday and will face Columbia and U Albany again on Tuesday, beginning at 9am.
