College Volleyball: Rider University 3, Iona College 2

The Rider University volleyball team snapped a six-match losing streak with a five-set win over Iona College on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 30) in Alumni Gymnasium.

The Rider University volleyball team snapped a six-match losing streak with a five-set win over Iona College on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 30) in Alumni Gymnasium.

Rider (7-8, 1-5 MAAC) won 21-25, 25-23, 25-20, 18-25, 15-10.

For the Broncs, senior tri-captain Brittany Gajewski (Whitehouse Station/Hunterdon Central) had 45 digs, including career dig 1,000 and sophomore Ashlee Amatulli (Menifee, Calif./Temecula Valley) had 42 assists including career assist 1,000.  Amatulli added 21 digs for Rider.

Junior Bridget Sheerin (Oak Lawn, Ill./Marist) had 20 digs and 18 kills, hitting .204 with sophomore Jaclyn Webber (Anaheim, Calif./Canyon) adding 14 digs and 12 kills with a .153 attack percentage.  Sheerin also had three service aces, all in the final set as Rider built onto a 7-6 lead to clinch the match by five.

Also for Rider, senior Stephanie Nagy (Muscatine, Iowa/Muscatine) had 10 kills and four blocks with junior Megan Knott (West Caldwell/James Caldwell) adding 10 digs and four service aces.

The match featured 13 ties and eight lead changes, including five ties and four lead changes in the final set.  Iona out-hit Rider .174 to .143.

This is the second season in a row that Rider has defeated Iona in Lawrenceville and only the fifth time in 27 matches that the Broncs have won over the Gaels.

Rider and Iona meet in New Rochelle on Nov. 1.

The Broncs are back in action on Saturday, Oct. 6, when Manhattan College visits Alumni Gym for a 1 p.m. MAAC match.
