College Wrestling: Broncs 3rd of 15 at Keystone Classic

The Rider University wrestling team on Sunday (Nov. 18) finished third out of 15 teams in the 18th annual Keystone Classic with 91-points, matching their finish from last year.

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Rider University wrestling team on Sunday (Nov. 18) finished third out of 15 teams in the 18th annual Keystone Classic with 91-points, matching their finish from last year.

The all-day tournament was hosted by The University of Pennsylvania and was held at The Palestra.

Northwestern were team champions with 156-points and the host Quakers came in second amassing 102.5 points.

Junior James Brundage (Ossining, N.Y./Ossining) finished second at 174. Seeded second, Brundage lost to Northwestern’s Lee Munster in the finals.  Brundage opened up with two big wins, defeating Appalachian State’s Dominic Vetell 20-2 via tech fall and Richard McDonald of Brown by fall in 1:53. In the semi-finals, Brundage beat Penn’s Ian Korb 7-3. Brundage finished third at last year’s Keystone Classic

Junior Ramon Santiago (Sayreville, N.J./Sayreville) came in second in the 165 weight class. Santiago  was the third seed advanced to the finals with two wins over Indiana’s Sawyer Morris 12-5 and Appalachian State’s Zachary Strickland 13-2 followed by a 7-5 OT win over NC State’s Tyler Smith.  In the championship match, Northwestern’s Pierce Harger knocked off Santiago by a 9-1 decision.

Overall, seven Bronc wrestlers had top six finishes. Rider (2-0) hosts Princeton on Dec. 1 at 7 p.m. in Alumni Gymnasium.
