Rider University Swimming and Diving Roundup

The Rider University men's and women's swimming and diving teams opened up their season at the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) Saturday afternoon (Oct. 13).

BALTIMORE, Md. - The Rider University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams opened up their season at the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) Saturday afternoon (Oct. 13).

The Rider men competed against UMBC in a dual meet, and the Rider women swam against both UMBC and James Madison University (JMU).

For the men, the Broncs fell to the Retrievers 171-114. The Rider women lost to both UMBC (167-117) and JMU (231-67).

For the Rider men, junior diver Trevor Hiller (Galloway Twp, N.J./Absegami) finished first in both the 1-meter (286.50) and 3-meter (272.95) diving events. Senior Johnny Funk (Las Vegas, Nev./Southeast Career & Tech. Academy) swam for first place in both the 100-yard backstroke (52.15) and the 200-yard individual medley (1:57.91).

For the Rider women, senior Kelly O’Connor (Beverly, Mass.) took first in the 200-yard butterfly, coming in at 2:08.10. O’Connor also took second in the 200-yard backstroke (2:07.84).  

Also for the Rider men, the 400-yard freestyle relay team of sophomore Brett Pederson (Sewell, N.J./St. Augustine Prep), freshman Jeffrey Prichard (Yorktown, Va./Tabb), junior Sean Newhouse (Katy, Texas/Morton Ranch) and freshman Adam Phillips (Springville, Pa/Elk Lake) finished first with a time of 3:17.35.

Senior Brian Molloy (Toms River, N.J./Toms River HS East) placed second in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:45.08. Pederson swam for second place in the 50-yard freestyle (22.04) and senior Julien Hensen (Delafield, Wis./Kettle Moraine) finished second in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:15.66). In the 100-yard butterfly, sophomore Zach DeLillo (Reading, Pa./Wilson) placed second swimming a 53.21 and freshman Evan Paules finished second behind Funk in the 200-yard individual medley (2:03.06).

On the 3-meter board, freshman Wayco Bailey (Casper, Wyo./Natrona County HS) finished second behind Hiller scoring a 233.15. The men’s 200-yard medley relay team of Funk, Hensen, DeLillo and Molloy raced for second with a time of 1:35.99.

The Rider men and women will host Seton Hall Thursday Oct. 18 in the Coppola Pool at Maurer Center on the Lawrenceville campus.
