Dragonflies are Subject of July 31 Nature Walk in Mercer County

Naturalist Jennifer Rogers will discuss how to help conserve the prehistoric predators.

Mercer County Park Commission Naturalist Jennifer Rogers will guide visitors through John A. Roebling Park in Hamilton in search of dragonflies on Sunday, July 31.

Residents can learn all about these prehistoric predators on a Dragonfly Walk from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Spring Lake entrance to the park.

Rogers will discuss how to conserve dragonflies, which are in jeopardy due to habitat loss and pollution, county officials said.

Dragonflies belong to one of the oldest groups of insects, with their distant relatives flying on 15-inch wings.
Outlasting the dinosaurs and enduring through mass extinctions, these industrious insects have remained and today are seen flitting over lakes and ponds.

Tips for identifying dragonflies will be discussed along with interesting behaviors and what they mean. Binoculars are advised.
