There is so much involved in the college application process, it's important to get as much information as possible. And it is never too early to start. There are information sessions offered year-round, often at your local library and at your own, or neighboring, high schools. Take advantage of all that is offered in your community as a little knowledge can go a long way!
Students and parents often gather information about specific colleges at a College Night hosted by a local high school. Be forewarned that such an event can truly be overwhelming with hundreds of colleges hosting tables and often more than 1,000 people in attendance! The way to make this a productive event is to plan in advance which college tables you would like to visit and what specific questions you would like addressed. The goal of attending this event should be to help you identify the colleges that may be a good fit. College Night can never replace an actual visit to a college campus, but it’s a great first step in narrowing down your list of potential colleges that actually warrant a visit.
Library Talks are likewise an invaluable source of information. As the Director of SAT Smart, I value the opportunity to offer Library Talks that cover a wide range of topics, including: PSAT and SAT Preparation, College Essays and Resumes, The Common Application and individual college applications, Scholarships and Financial Aid, and so much more. Actually, I am offering a Library Talk on Tuesday, August 6th from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at the Lawrence Library, 2751 Brunswick Pike in Lawrenceville, N.J. Parents and students alike are always incredibly eager for all of this information which invariably makes the College Application Process much less stressful. The sooner you get all of your questions answered and actually begin the process, the greater your chance of being accepted, with scholarship money, to the college of your dreams!
