When a 23-year-old man suffered an opioid overdose at Trenton-Mercer Airport last week, a Mercer County Sheriff’s Officer sprang into action. The man was visibly experiencing an overdose in the airport’s passenger area early Thursday morning, June 27, according to Mercer County Sheriff Jack Kemler.

Sheriff’s Officer Matthew Sciabbarrasi of the Airport Unit successfully administered the opioid antidote Naloxone (NARCAN), bringing him back to consciousness and saving his life, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Soon after, the man was taken to Capital Health Medical Center — Hopewell by Ewing EMS for treatment. First responders from the Trenton-Mercer Airport Fire Department #34 assisted as well.

“It is for crisis situations such as this one, that we continually train our officers on how to administer Narcan. Sheriff’s Officer Matthew Sciabbarrasi’s heroic actions exemplify the level of training that is needed by today’s law enforcement officers,” Kemler said.

In 2014, Naloxone kits were distributed to all Mercer County law enforcement agencies under a program supported by the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office, the Sheriff’s Office and the State Attorney General.
