Mercer Co. Man Charged With Murder In December Fatal Shooting

MERCER COUNTY, NJ — A Trenton man was charged for a December 2021 fatal shooting that occurred on Garfield Avenue, Mercer County Prosecutor Angelo J. Onofri said Wednesday.

Tevin Laster, 27, is charged with murder, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and unlawful possession of a weapon Onofri said. He was arrested on Saturday, Jan. 8, in Trenton by members of the Mercer County Tactical Response Team, U.S, Marshals NY/NJ Regional Fugitive Task Force, Mercer County Homicide Task Force, and Mercer County Narcotics Task Force.

Around 1:40 a.m. on Saturday, Dec.18, 2021, Trenton police received a Shot Spotter activation in the 400 block of Garfield Avenue. On arrival, officers found the victim, identified as Quashawn Kelley, in the rear of a residence on Garfield Avenue suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to the head, torso, arms, and legs, Onofri said.

Kelley was taken to Capital Health Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

Onofri’s office has filed a motion to detain Laster pending trial.
