​Mercer Co. Man Plowed Into PA Police Cruiser, Injuring Officer: Cops

The Trenton man struck a police cruiser from behind, causing head and neck injuries to the police officer, authorities said.

MERCER COUNTY, NJ —A Trenton man has been charged in a crash that injured a Morrisville, PA police officer on Route 1 Monday night, authorities said.

Juan Martinez, 41, faces numerous citations after he struck the cruiser driven by Morrisville Borough Police Cpl. William Smith, who was assisting Falls Township Police with a disabled vehicle on southbound Route 1 in the area of Route 32 at 8:40 p.m. Monday.

Smith's police cruiser was struck from behind and the officer suffered head and neck injuries.

He was taken to Capital Health for evaluation and treatment. Smith told police he was not admitted to the hospital.

According to Falls Township Police, impairment was not a cause of the accident.

Martinez had an active arrest warrant from the Bucks County Sheriff's Department, for which he was taken into custody, police said.

Martinez was cited for the following violations:

  • Driving Under Suspension DUI-Related
  • Drivers Required to Be Licensed
  • Duty of Driver in an Emergency Response Area
  • Careless Driving
  • Driving Vehicle at Safe Speed
  • Unregistered Vehicle
  • Financial Responsibility
