Windsor Dermatology Founder Named 'Outstanding Physician-Clinician,' Receives Presidential Citation

Medical Director Dr. Jerry Bagel Recognized for Decades of Psoriasis Research, Treatment

EAST WINDSOR, N.J. –March 4, 2016 –Dr. Jerry Bagel, Windsor Dermatology’s founder and medical director, has worked toward curing psoriasis and helping people who suffer from the sometimes debilitating, even deadly, skin condition for more than 30 years.

This week, Dr. Bagel received highest honors from two prestigious professional organizations. The National Psoriasis Foundation (NPF) honored him with its inaugural Outstanding Physician-Clinician award and the American Academy of Dermatology awarded him its Presidential Citation for his “significant contributions and dedication to promoting excellence in psoriasis research.”

“He founded the President’s Council at the NPF, which has raised more than $1 million for psoriasis research,” said Dr. Mark Lebwohl, chairman of the Department of Dermatology at Icahn Medical School at Mount Sinai in New York and president of the American Academy of Dermatology who nominated Dr. Bagel for his NPF award in addition to awarding the AAD Presidential Citation. “Apart from being an extraordinarily caring physician who has taken excellent care of patients that we have in common, Dr. Bagel has done more than almost anyone to support research for a cure for psoriasis.”

In supporting a cure, Dr. Bagel served as the New Jersey State Chair for NPF’s inaugural bike ride in August, 2015. Windsor Dermatology was an event sponsor and the team raised $12,500 of the $300,000 total raised. His team also participated in the Walk to Cure Psoriasis. He is a four term member of the NPF’s Medical Board. Windsor Dermatology’s Psoriasis Treatment Center of Central New Jersey is an integral part of Dr. Bagel’s practice and is the state’s first complete facility for advanced psoriasis research and therapies.

“I’m in awe of these honors,” Dr. Bagel said. “Throughout my career, I’ve been passionate about the study and treatment of psoriasis for the benefit of my patients. It is truly humbling to receive these awards that recognize my dedication and contributions toward a cure.”

Dr. Bagel became passionate about psoriasis while completing his residency at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in New York.

“Patients with severe psoriasis were hospitalized for a month,” he recalled. “Realizing their grief and depression, I organized the hospital’s first group counseling sessions so the patients could express their feelings. It was from these experiences that I knew that psoriasis treatment and research was my life’s calling.”

Both awards were presented during the American Academy of Dermatology’s Annual Conference in Washington, D.C. The Presidential Citation was awarded on March 3 and the NPF award was given during a reception on March 4.

Windsor Dermatology provides comprehensive medical dermatologic care from acne and warts to the most advanced techniques for psoriasis, eczema, skin cancer, vitiligo and skin allergies. But psoriasis has always been Dr. Bagel’s passion.

Dr. Bagel began delivering then-groundbreaking phototherapy to his patients with psoriasis in 1985, when he bought two phototherapy units and trained nurses to use the devices to relieve patient suffering/symptoms. Over time, patients who once traveled to NYC or Philadelphia for treatment found their way to Windsor Dermatology’s Psoriasis Treatment Center of Central NJ.

Over the past 30 years, Dr. Bagel has become a world-renowned expert on psoriasis and speaks to international audiences. He has published more than 50 articles, participated in more than 100 clinical trials and is asked to peer review psoriasis articles for numerous dermatologic journals.

Dr. Bagel’s awards come on the heels of Windsor Dermatology’s 30-year anniversary. When he launched the practice on June 29, 1985, he did so with just himself, a receptionist and a handful of clients. Today, the thriving practice includes six board-certified dermatologists, an aesthetician, a newly-expanded clinical trials department and a cutting-edge research facility.

Earlier this year, Windsor Dermatology expanded into a 3,000-square-foot clinical trials department. The expansion puts a stronger emphasis on medical dermatology research and treatment through high-quality clinical trials, in which the practice has been participating since 1990. Windsor Dermatology has been involved in most of the FDA-approved psoriasis treatments during the past 25 years.

Dr. Bagel attended public schools in Hightstown, N.J., before earning his B.A. in Biology from Boston University, his M.S. in Biochemistry from Rutgers University and his M.D. from Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York.
