5 Things You Need to Know Today: Monday, Feb. 27

A potpourri of events and useful information for folks in Little Silver and Oceanport.

Check out the list of five things you need to know today:

  1. Could it be that the more optimistic of those smelly groundhogs at the beginnning of the month was right and spring really is just around the corner? Today's weather will have you believing his dubious prognostications and thinking him (or is it her?) a genius. Temperatures will hit 56 degrees, according to the National Weather Service, and look for sunny skies to help warm things up after the weekend's wicked winds. Tuesday looks to be slightly cooler and the next chance of rain might hit Wednesday.
  2. Markham's Warriors basketball teams had a killer season and hope to continue their winning streaks this week with playoff games. The girls kick it off tomorrow after school at , taking on Shrewsbury. The boys play Tinton Falls on Wedsnesday at home after school. Go Warriors!
  3. Little Silver's borough council will hold its last meeting of the month tonight at 8 p.m. at. On the agenda: public hearing on an ordinance setting salaries for certain borough officers and employees; a resolution to appropriate emergency funds for the borough's pending property revalution.
  4. Oceanport moms (okay, and maybe, like, one dad), are you looking for a great excuse to bag making dinner tonight? Bless the Maple Place 8th grade then, because the Salad Shack in Long Branch is donating 15 percent of sales on Monday, , to the class.
  5. Have you heard that Oceanport's board of education and borough council will hold a joint meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 28? It's at 7 p.m. at Maple Place Middle School and one resident on the Oceanport Resident's Facebook page suggests that parents check out the state's Dept. of Education report card to brush up before the meeting.
