The Importance of Balance
Keeping balance in mind when it comes to to your physical fitness routine.
On the day I turned 40, I did my very first triathlon. I had talked about it for years and it was time to shut up and do it already. Eventually, I was hooked and spent the next 5 summers doing triathlons. I felt so accomplished but I was missing things.
My training was nothing but cardio. And frankly, I hated running and having a daily distance schedule made me crazy. I felt completely un-balanced. In retrospect, I realize that I needed stretching and strength training, too. As a result, I started to take classes, lift, do yoga and bike/swim with the just the right amount of training/exercise that felt good to me.
Now I am more balanced and toned.

Fitness, getting in-shape and losing weight is a very personal thing. What works for me may not work for you. Every person’s genetic make-up is different; therefore, diet and exercise needs are different for every person.
There is not a one size fits all model when it comes to physical fitness and wellness.

However, I have learned through working with many, many people in classes and personal training there are absolutes that do affect everyone. Doing just one type of exercise, for example, running, cycling, yoga, barre, lifting, is not good for anyone. This causes over usage injuries, which can affect everyone. Also, mind body boredom can happen. It’s like eating the same food everyday. Eliminating an entire food group is not realistic for most people, eating smart amounts of healthy grains, proteins, fruits and vegetables is a far better more effective program.
With both food and exercise, balance is key.
Mix it up, find what works for you, try new things and have fun. And remember, you are responsible for you. Listen to your body. If something doesn’t feel right, ask your instructor for a modifications and be gentile with yourself until you feel better.
