Monmouth Medical Center Presents Early October Community Health Education Programs

PLAY IT SAFE: CARDIAC AND CONCUSSION SCREENINGS FOR YOUNG ADULTS
Saturday, October 3 from 8 a.m. to Noon
The Matthew J. Morahan III Health Assessment Center for Athletes will provide free cardiac and concussion baseline screenings to young athletes. Available to the first 130 young athletes who sign up, the cardiac screening is open to those ages 6 to 18. The concussion baseline screening, available to the first 80 who sign up, is for young athletes ages 12 and older. These screenings sponsored by the Matthew J. Morahan III Health Assessment Center for Athletes at Barnabas Health, take place at the Cranmer Ambulatory Surgery Center at Monmouth Medical Center, located at 300 Second Avenue in Long Branch. Registration is required by emailing teamlink@barnabashealth.org. Free.
11TH ANNUAL LATINO FESTIVAL OF MONMOUTH COUNTY
Saturday, October 3 from noon to 8:30 p.m.
The Latino Festival of Monmouth County will celebrate its 11th anniversary on October 3 in downtown Freehold. The festival coincides with Hispanic Heritage Month which takes place from September 15 to October 15 and will feature Latino food, fun and music. The Monmouth Medical Center team will be onsite to provide free health screenings. This program will feature free clinical breast exams and screening mammograms for insured and uninsured women. These programs are limited, so early registration is suggested. The Oct. 3 program will be held at the Jacqueline M. Wilentz Comprehensive Breast Center at Monmouth Medical Center, located at 300 Second Avenue in Long Branch. The Oct. 8 program will be held at the Jacqueline M. Wilentz Breast Center at Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus, located at 500 River Avenue, Suite 200 in Lakewood. Sunday, October 4 – Pre-race activities begin at 7 a.m. Race begins at 9 a.m.
According to Breast Cancer.org, about one in eight U.S. women will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime. Each year, the Annual Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure and its runners race fight this statistic. This year, Monmouth Medical Center is the Survivor Recognition and Celebration Sponsor for the race, which takes place at Six Flags Great Adventure, located at 1 Six Flags Blvd. in Jackson. MAXIMIZING MEMORY

This lecture, presented by Shira Goldberg, MD, Department of Geriatrics at Monmouth Medical Center, will help you recognize the effects of normal aging on the brain, improve brain function and prevent “senior moments” with brain exercises. DIABETES SELF-MANAGEMENT SERIES
Fridays, October 16, 23, 30 & November 6 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.
Mondays, October 26 & November 2, 9 & 16 from 10 to 11 a.m.
Learn how to manage your diabetes by attending this four-session diabetes education program focusing on diet, nutrition, glucose monitoring, medications, meal plans, prevention and treatment of diabetes complications, dining out and benefits of exercise. The program is taught by a registered nurse and a registered dietitian/certified diabetes educator. It will be held at The Center for Diabetes Education at Monmouth Medical Center, located at 300 Second Avenue in Long Branch. For information and to register for classes, call 732-923-5025.
